Free Repair Cafe
Got something in need of repair?
Bring your wobbly furniture or well-worn textiles and learn to fix them with our experts!
Join us at the DLR LexIcon Library on the 29th August where you can bring along your broken piece and work with our team to help you repair it. There will be experts in textiles and furniture from the Rediscovery Centre on hand to share their knowledge!
Important Information Around Bookings:
Registration is required for this free community repair event.
We’ve split the day into two sessions to space out the crowds:
Morning session (11 AM–1:30 PM)
Afternoon session (1:30 PM–4 PM)
No repairs will be taken after 2.30pm, depending on the queue.
Repairs are on a first-come, first-served basis on the day.
Book into the session that works for you. Each repair slot is around 45 minutes.
As these free community events can be quite busy, and we want to ensure everyone is able to join in and learn, we are only able to repair one item per person.
Please note that we are not able to repair electronics, as our specialities lie in textiles and furniture! Check out Tog Hackerspace Repair Cafe, Mud Island Repair Cafe, or Harold's Cross Repair Cafe for electronics repairs.
Waiting Times:
Please note that these free Repair Cafes are very popular and there can be a waiting time of around 90 minutes, depending on your arrival time. When you arrive, our team will give you an estimate of the waiting time. If you are able to stay, you can participate in our communal sewing project, dive into our repair books, or explore the local area while you wait for your slot!
Repairs:
Please find below a list of repairs we can provide. While we can’t upcycle or take on big projects on the day, we are happy for you to use your timeslot to get advice on how to complete your project at home.
The Textiles team can work on the following repairs with you:
- Patching holes in clothing/textiles
- Taking up hems on skirts, tops or trouser legs
- Fixing zips but not replacing zips
- Replacing buttons
- While we can’t upcycle or do alterations on the day we are happy for you to use your timeslot to get advice on how to complete the upcycle or alteration at home
The Furniture team can work on the following repairs with you:
- Wooden dining chairs
- Wooden kitchen chairs
- Wooden coffee tables
- Wooden stools
- Footstools
- While we can’t upcycle or take on big projects on the day we are happy for you to use your timeslot to get advice on how to complete your project at home
This free event is part of a new partnership between Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council and the Rediscovery Centre, that, among other things, will establish a Rediscovery Centre hub in the heart of DLR to mobilise local action. Check out what else we're up to!
