Celebrating a birthday soon? Try out these Reusable Party Kits
Birthday parties and celebrations can often produce a lot of waste, with many party bundles full of single-use plastic. The ‘Borrow, Use, Return’ project aims to tackle the problem in a fun and collaborative way.
Birthday parties and celebrations can often produce a lot of waste, with many party bundles full of single-use plastic. The ‘Borrow, Use, Return’ project aims to tackle the problem in a fun and collaborative way.
Led by 10 local authorities, ‘Borrow, Use, Return’ is a collaborative project that provides reusable party packs to community and voluntary groups, helping to promote circular living.
These party packs - created by Community Reuse Network Ireland members - cater for up to 30 people and include everything from cups and plates to upcycled bunting. All of the items included are washable, reusable and made to be shared with care. While the main intention is for these packs to be used at community events, they can also be used for family gatherings and other events when needed.
After each event, the items are cleaned and returned, ready for their next party. This cycle of borrowing, using, and returning keeps the pack in circulation, reduces reliance on single-use items and supports a circular community by keeping resources in use for longer.
Planning a party?
The project also encourages circular party planning with these practical tips.
Send digital invites instead of paper
Swap party bags for creative group activities
Wrap gifts in fabric using the Furoshiki technique
Reduce food waste by sharing leftovers with guests
These party packs are available from local authorities in Carlow, Clare, Cork County, Cork City, Limerick City & County, Kerry, Kilkenny, Tipperary, Waterford City & County and Wexford. If you want to find out more about what is available in your area, simply send a quick email to your local council. The initiative is funded through the EPA National Waste Prevention Programme, delivering on targets set out in the National Waste Management Plan for a Circular Economy.
“Reusing items is a positive climate action that we can all do,” says Ella Ryan, Environmental Awareness Officer from Waterford City & County Council. “This project will help communities become more circular and sustainable without the cost and environmental impact of single use party ware or products.”
Want to make your own party kit?
Want to make your own party kit?In addition to these party kits, there is a network of groups and businesses already providing sustainable party kits and advice on how to start your own. Carrickmacross Toy Library offers party kits that include toys and soft play sets as well as reusable cutlery, cups and plates. The Party Kits Network provides advice and tips, encouraging individuals to join the hundreds of people starting their own kits. Users can upload their listing on the site, with a global interactive map allowing users to find their local party kit easily. Even libraries are getting involved, like Mayo County Library, who have a colourful party kit that is free to rent with a small deposit.
